Earning A Doctoral Degree Online Can Give Your Career A Needed Boost

Getting a Doctoral Degree online is very possible in this day and age as more and more colleges and universities are offering online college degrees. A doctoral degree is typically the most advanced degree available in a specific field of study. Becoming a doctoral candidate takes several years of hard work beyond a Masters Degree but often makes the holder of the doctorate eligible for advancement and higher income potential.

Most people think of the PhD when discussing doctoral degrees and it is probably the most common doctoral degree awarded by colleges and universities. There are others and many times it is possible to earn a doctoral degree online or primarily online. The J.D. or Juris Doctorate is awarded to students who complete an accredited law school degree. D.Ed. is a Doctor of Education and a D.A. is a Doctor of Arts. The only doctorate that currently is not available in a primarily online setting is the M.D. or Doctor of Medicine (for obvious reasons).

The advent of distance learning has swelled the opportunities available for potential candidates to work toward and earn a Doctoral Degree Online. Distance learning has come a long way since the term was first coined and two types of distance learning are typical in today’s online degree programs. Synchronous is the term used to describe a situation where online students were connected to the classroom and received the lessons and lecture at the same time the in-class students were. Most Online College Degrees are taught in an Asynchronous fashion these days. Students have assignments, projects, presentations, or homework due by a certain date but are not required to be online or attending class at any particular time. The flexibility afforded online college students is one of the most appealing aspects of earning a Doctoral Degree online.

Students who need flexibility due to work or home obligations are able to complete assignments at a time and place that is convenient to their specific situation. Many graduate level students are already employed in their field and requiring daily attendance would certainly present a hardship to many qualified candidates. The opportunity to work toward a Doctoral Degree online allows these candidates to continue their employment and other obligations. In fact, it is entirely possible these days to begin with an Online Associates Degree, transfer and complete an Online Bachelors and Masters program, and ultimately continue to the Doctorate level.

It should be noted that online college degree programs are certainly not for everyone and the television advertisements about going to school in your pajamas is a bit misleading. No matter what level of education you are seeking whether Associates, Bachelors, Masters, or Doctorate, online college degrees require a high degree of self-discipline, self-motivation, and organizational skills in order to keep up with the classwork and pass the examinations. There are studies that show a correlation of these types of potential students (motivated, disciplined, and organized) and their attraction to online degree programs and it is especially noted in students who are looking to start a Doctoral Degree online.
